THE SHIP HAS SUNK

As many of you know I have been captaining Sinking Ship Studio since mid 2011. Unfortunately the ship has sunk. For those who don’t know Sinking Ship Studio was an urban and contemporary art gallery anchored in the guts of Wollongong, Australia. It provided a DIY space for artists to exhibit their work without the constraints or costs of a commercial gallery.  In an effort to revitalise the vacant strip of Crown Street myself, with the assistance of Cultural Services and a good bunch of friends, transformed an empty shop into a vibrant and creative space for artists to exhibit their work. The ship moved early on after the first space was commercially leased, I didn’t have to go far as the next door shop was offered. However, after cleaning up and painting a second space the building owner decided to pull out of this project after only a few months and issued a letter of eviction in January 2012. Currently a row of 5 vacant shops, 2 former SSS spaces (the first space now being vacant again), line the main street of Wollongong with many more vacant premises surrounding.
